LIMITATIONS - although DB Cloth will absorb or insulate a significant amount of radiation energy, it is not an effective insulator verse convection (contact) heat, and can not stand up to the intense heat of a laser, PEC, or similar beam weapon. It should also be noted that DB cloth always conveys absorbed energy to its heat sink, and if a significant amount of heat energy gathers at the this point, it will radiate heat. Because it is readily available, facilities that are particularly concerned about covert intrusion attempts (prisons, etc) will typically have defenses systems (pressure sensitive floors, etc) that thwart this technology.

General Information

Deep Black Cloth is an elastic cloth capable of absorbing 99% of ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light radiation on its active side, and conveying this absorbed energy as heat through micro-tubules to a predefined heat sink/heat venting port.

APPLICATIONS - STEALTH/SNEAK SUIT - A flexible, one-size-fits all double sided application of DB Cloth in the form of a fully hooded jump suit, providing significant stealth characteristics, but in no way acting as a defense against attacks. It renders the wearer invisible to heat sensitive passive scans, and absorbs all scan radiation to thwart a wide array of active scans. Note that when used in this application, heat will accumulate in the suit heat sink, requiring a heat purge. Use of special heat collecting pellets at the suit ventilation point can extend operations, but pellets must be ejected from the suit's heat sink (usually in the small of the back) upon saturation. Proper disposal of a heat absorbing pellet is essential if a stealth profile is to be maintained.

STANDARD DURATION PRIOR TO HEAT SATURATION: 10 min

FACTORS EFFECTING HEAT DURATION:

Condition Factor Near Complete Darkness: x4 Darkness (star light): x3 Moonlight, twilight, dusk, dawn: x2 Indoor, morning, evening: x1 Daylight: x0.5 Intense daylight: x 0.25 Heat absorbent pellet system: x3 Species with normally high temperature: x0.5 Species with Terran like temperature: x1 Species with normally low temperature: x2 Light Exertion: x2 Medium or mixed exertion: x1 Heavy exertion: x0.5

Example: A Terran (standard temperature being x1) running hard (Heavy exertion x0.5) to escape pursuing guards in normal day light conditions (daylight x 0.5) could run for 10min x 1 x 0.5 x 0.5 or only 2.5 minutes prior to heat saturation. Performing the same heavy exertion (x.5) in the dark (darkness x3) with a heat absorbent pellet system in place (x3) would yield 45 minutes of operation before requiring a heat purge.

Note: Atmospheric conditions such as cloud cover, fog, or other light reducing phenomena should be treated as one category darker than normal light conditions. Other factors such as the frequent absorption of intense scans, greater than normal ambient temperatures, or the proximity to other sources of radiation may also reduce the amount of time before a heat purge is necessary. The size of the individual, and any equipment radiating equipment contained in the suit, may also reduce duration.

OTHER STEALTH APPLICATIONS - In addition to the Stealth Suite, DB Cloth has been used in the manufacture of stealth parachutes and parasails, stealth tents and equipment tarpaulins, and as the liner in briefcases, backpacks, and even coffins. DB Cloth is effective against all radiation based active scans. Its deep black color makes the stealth aspects of the cloth particularly useful in periods of darkness.

INSULATION APPLICATIONS - As an insulator for radiated heat, DB Cloth liners with the active side toward the wearer is often used for arctic weather clothing, cold weather outer garments, emergency blankets, etc.

FUNCTIONAL AND FASHION WEAR - DB Cloth is often a component of EVA suits, mining jump suits, combat fatigues, rescue and recovery operator suits, and other applications where exposure to hazardous radiation is a concern, although when used in this capacity, it is often restricted to protecting vital or exposed body areas rather than full body protection. DP Cloth also enjoys popularity in the fashion world, as the night black cloth gives the impression of disembodied heads, arms, and legs in darkened dance clubs.

RELATED TECHNOLOGY - DB technology may be applied to other objects via an adhesive spray in the field, but the result is only 20% as effective as the woven cloth form. Professional application of the adhesive spray is twice as good as field applications, but still far less effective than a DB woven cloth.
